Name: Rebecca Carter Location: Winchester HS Date: October 1, 2012
Objectives:
- Melody instruments at mm 5 will be able to play the staccato-tenuto markings to their full effect.
- Bassoon, Tenor Sax, and Baritone will play the quarter note at mm 105 and mm 109 to their full value and not clip the note.
- Tubas, Baritone, Bass Clarinet, and Bassoon will be able to play the upbeat pattern at mm 110.
Procedure:
1. Students will start at the beginning and play to measure 29.
2. Students will reset at measure 21 and just the melody instruments will play their part.
a. Flute, Clarinet, Tenor Sax, and Baritone.
b. Things to listen for: Is the group playing the line as written? Are they clipping the value of the articulation?
3. The rest of the ensemble will add in and play the section from mm 21 to mm 29. (Repeat if need be).
4. Students will reset at mm 29 and play to mm 110. (If unable to, take it section by section and reset at nearest rehearsal marking).
5. Starting at mm 102, have the Bassoon, Tenor Sax, and Baritone play to mm 110 without a breath between mm 105 and 106.
6. Have the group add the breath back in, but stress that the quarter note needs to be given its full value instead of clipping it for the breath.
7. Add the full ensemble in and play from mm 102 to mm 110.
8. At mm 110, have everyone in the ensemble except the Tubas, Bass Clarinet, Baritone, and Bassoon clap the beat.
9. While the ensemble is clapping the beat, have the low brass and reeds section play their part from mm 110 to mm 118. (Repeat as needed).
10. Add the Trombones, Bari Sax and Tenor Sax to those playing. (Repeat as needed).
11. Add the Clarinets so that everyone that is supposed to be playing is playing. (Repeat as needed.)
12. Take out those that are clapping and have it played as written. (Repeated as needed).
13. Resetting at mm 110, have the ensemble play to the end of the piece.
14. If time permits, the students will perform a full run of the piece.
Assessment:
Formal:
- Director will listen for correct rhythms, articulations, and phrasing in each section that is worked on and will repeat if not up to the standard of the ensemble.
Summative:
- Students will be able to play the piece as whole to a higher standard for Mr. Fletcher and for the concert coming up next week.
