Objectives:
- Students will be able to play the piece with proper dynamic contrasts. Fortes will be stronger and fuller and pianos will be softer, but with direction.
- Tuba, Baritone, Bass Clarinet, and Bassoon will be able to play the upbeat patter from mm 110 to 118 in time and with rhythmic integrity.
- Ensemble minus Flute, Clarinet, and Mallet Percussion will be able to play the upbeat pattern from mm 133 to 138, plus Alto Sax and Trumpets switching to a downbeat pattern in mm136.
Procedures:
Warm Ups:
1. Based on concert F major scale, Students will play the scale pattern I-ii, I-iii, I-IV, etc…
2. Students will perform “Count-down” exercise on the scale of F major (concert) and play piano each time they come back to the tonic and grow in dynamics until they reach the top note.
3. Students will play the #3 Chorale Sheet.
a. In F major (concert)
Carmina Burana:
1. Students will play from the beginning to mm 102.
2. Students will go back and address the differences they see in:
a. mm 21 or 45 compared to mm 61
b. mm 61 compared to mm 77
c. mm 77 compared to mm 93
3. Students will start at mm 45 and play at a piano dynamic and with the articulations of staccato-tenuto until they reach mm 61 and they switch to a forte dynamic and with accents and staccatos. And finally, upon reaching mm 77, switching to a dynamic level of fortissimo.
4. Students will retrace back to the beginning and play up to mm 102 again with appropriate dynamic contrast.
5. Resetting at mm 102, Students will play up to mm 135 (through the first ending).
6. Low brass and reeds will try a new strategy to help with the upbeat pattern in mm 110.
a. Low brass and reeds will sing their part while clapping the downbeats. (In order for them to feel the pulse).
b. Low brass and reeds will sing their part while tapping their feet to the downbeats.
c. Finally, low brass and reeds will play their part while tapping their feet to the downbeats.
7. The rest of the ensemble will join in at mm 110 and play up to the first ending in mm 135.
8. Resetting at mm 102, students will play at a piano dynamic until mm 118 (through the upbeat patterns).
9. Lastly, the students will touch on mm 133 through 138 as a refresher from the previous class period.
a. Low brass and reeds plus snare drum and timpani play the upbeats throughout the 6 measures.
b. Alto Sax and trumpets play the upbeats for 3 measures and the downbeats for 3 measures.
Assessment:
Formative:
- Director will be able to listen for the dynamic contrasts in the students’ performance and address any issues with dynamic changes. Director will also be able to judge to see if the exercise worked for the low brass and reeds section at mm 110.
Summative:
- Students will be able to play the piece with proper dynamics and rhythmic integrity at their concert on Thursday.
