Name: Rebecca Carter Class: 8:00 am MusED 375 Date: February 21, 2012
Objectives:
- Students will perform on instruments, alone and with others.
- Students will understand the meaning of phrasing and be able to demonstrate shaping of a phrase.
- Students will be able to read and notate music.
Procedures:
1. Students will participate in a rhythmic warm up that will relate back to the piece, using patterns found within the first 20 bars.
Rhythm based off of: Ta di me | Ta - | - - | - di | ta di
2. Students will participate in a melodic warm up based on the F major scale.
a. 4 notes per scale degree – instructor shapes and phrases each set of notes.
3. Students will sight read the first 7 measures of the piece, watching for shaping cues from the teacher.
4. Students will then play those same 7 measures again; making any adjustments they need to after the first time through.
**These first 4 steps will be done without any oral communication from the teacher**
5. Students will be asked to give descriptive words that explain what the teacher is trying to communicate to the students.
6. Students will play again, but this time will go onto measure 16 and stop.
7. Again, students will be asked to give descriptive words again, and also asked what was different between the first few measures and the next measures.
8. Students will then play the same group of measures (1-16) without the conductor and will be asked to shape the music as an ensemble.
9. Students will be offered another try if something goes wrong, if not the conductor will join back in for a final run through of the first 16 measures.
Assessment:
Formative Assessment:
- Teacher will listen for a difference in shape as the students play. The goal is for the students to not remain the same while playing, but to be expressive and change.
- Teacher will listen for students to shape the music themselves while the conductor is not there.
Summative Assessment:
- Teacher addresses the same objective of shaping and phrase on another song.
Feedback and Ideas for Next Rehearsal:
I would like to dive deeper into the piece and explode other possibilities for shaping and phrasing. I would also like another lesson where we take other pieces that we are working on and apply this concept to those as well.
