Lesson Plan Secondary General Methods Seasons Around the World
Content and Achievement Standards: - Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. o Demonstrate the different vocal parts. - Playing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. o Demonstrate their knowledge by clapping the rhythmic ostinato that goes throughout the song. - Understanding music in relation to history and culture. o Discussing the origin of The Carol of the Bells.
Class Goals and Objectives: - Students will be singing in 2 parts with a body percussion accompaniment. - Students will understand more about rhythmic and melodic ostinatos and a walking bass line. - Students will know more about Ukraine and the origins of the carol.
Materials: - A recording of the song “Carol of the Bells” performed by Barlowgirl. - A recording of the song “Carol of the Bells” performed by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. - Sheet music with the 2 vocal parts and rhythmic part. - Lyric dictation sheet.
Procedures: 1. Students will discussion favorite holidays and what they love about their favorite holidays. 2. Instructor will tie this to the fact that the Holiday Season is coming up and Winter break is coming up soon. And relate it to the different carols that are sung around this time of year. 3. Students will take a lyric dictation sheet of “Carol of the Bells”. 4. Instructor will ask the students to fill out the lyric dictation sheet while listening to the version by Barlowgirl. (Will take more than one listening). 5. Instructor will explain that the carol is built off of 2 basic concepts an ostinato, along with a walking bass line. 6. Instructor will inform students of the history and origin of the carol. 7. Students will listen to the song. Instructor will ask the students whether the lyrics that are on their lyric dictation sheet are following the ostinato or the walking bass line. (Should come up with the ostinato part). 8. Students and Instructor will clap the rhythmic ostinato. 9. Students will parts the lyrics and ostinato together by rote with the Instructor modeling for them. 10. Instructor will explain what an ostinato is to the students. 11. Students will then learn the walking bass part by rote with the Instructor as the model. 12. Instructor will explain what a walking bass line is to the students. 13. Students will pick the part that they are most comfortable with and all parts will be put together for a run through. 14. Students will listen to the performance of Carol of the Bells by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. During the listening, the students will first sing the ostinato when it comes in, and then the walking bass line when it appears.
Assessment of Goals and Objectives:
Assessment will be informal. The first part of the assessment will be the students putting together the different parts of the carol and giving a performance. The second part of the assessment will be in if the students can or can not find the ostinato and bass line in the second version of the carol.
Follow Up Lesson:
A future lesson should continue in the thyme Sounds of the Season Around the World, and also include either the ostinato or the walking bass line, or both.
